What should I wear during a session?

Sessions can be done fully clothed, although you may do the session with less clothing on, if you prefer. In Thai Yoga we feel that the body is sacred, and every body is honored. It is not appropriate to wear a bra, belt, or any other restictive clothing, as we want there to be as little restirction on the blood flood and movement of energy throughout the body.

SomaVedatm Thai Yoga sounds like counseling.  Are you a counselor?

The work I do is based on Love, Inner guidance, Emotional Freedom Techniques, and SomaVeda(tm) principles of bringing balance to our whole being.  Although not trained in a traditional Western psychology setting, I have been trained under Dr. Anthony James in the SomaVeda(tm) Holistic Health model of emotional integration, and chakra psychology.  Additionally, through my own experiences I have developed a capacity to listen, be receptive, and practice non-judgment in such a way that people feel safe opening up to me.  Sometimes we forget that others cannot give us answers.  I certainly can't, and I would be skeptical of anyone who claims to.  The reason for this is that in SomaVeda(tm) Thai Yoga, we strive for an internally guided life.  I hope to assist you in discovering and living your own Truth, but I will not and cannot give it to you.

Do you do outcall sessions?

Yes! I will come to your place in the Ithaca area to provide you with services - in the comfort of your own home!

I'm so inflexible.  Will I be able to do SomaVedatm Thai Yoga Bodywork?

YES!  Thai Yoga Bodywork is perfect for people who are "inflexible".  Each session is 100% individualized so we do what is perfect for YOUR body.  Often called "lazy-person's Yoga", a session is done with you lying down on a mat, as your body is guided and stretched in various therapeutic positions and movements. Your body is not only stretched safely and with support, but the muscles and tissues are COMPRESSED in a very unique way that allows the body to open up quickly, with long-lasting results.

I already practice Yoga. Why would I want to have a Thai Yoga Session? What benefits can I receive from a session that I can't receive from a Yoga class or practicing Yoga on my own?

  • "Amazing!"  "Unlike any other massage I've ever had!" These are just some of the ways people describe Thai Yoga Sessions.  I've practiced Yoga for over 8 years and have noticed a DRAMATIC improvement in my practice since receiving Thai Yoga. It's kind of interesting that practicing Yoga by myself would only take my so far, but with a partner, and with HELP, I could go so much further.  This shows that as humans WE NEED EACH OTHER if we want to experience our true potential.  Thai Yoga exemplifies the way human beings are meant to live : in community.
  • Many benefits that you can will receive from a SomaVedatm Thai Yoga session are hard - if not impossible - to receive from practicing Yoga on your own or in a class. I can help bring you into asanas that you would NEVER be able to do on your own!
  •  In a session you will be able to simultaneously contract and lengthen a muscle with Resistance-Type stretching, thereby getting maximal results in a much shorter period of time than you would in typical Yoga stretches.  This is something you CANNOT do on your own.
  • Unlike many yoga postures, in a session you will be able to relax completely while going deeply and safely into challenging yoga postures that you may have never been able to do before.  Going into these postures will show your body it's true potential, something we often don't experience, because we cannot let go fully.
  •  In a session you will receive deep tissue and fascial release.  Stretching a muscle is one thing, but compressing a muscle allows it to open in a much different way.  Plus, it allows the connective tissue to release - which is something that stretching alone does not accomplish very well.
  •  In a session I will help you discover which Yoga postures are ideal for you! We often don't take into account our body type, or our Dosha, when doing Yoga postures; we just do different ones.  But being very specific in the postures we do can make our practice that much more enjoyable balancing, and rewarding.
  • Coming in for a private session will give you the chance to receive an outsider's perspective on your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual state.  Sometimes it's hard to have a balanced perspective on our life - because we are stuck in OUR OWN LIMITED perspective!  Seeing someone else can help us see things in a more balanced way.

Does SomaVedatm Thai Yoga Bodywork hurt?

A SomaVedatm Thai Yoga session feels great! - for the most part.  Overall, you will feel like you are in heaven.  Some people even fall asleep in sessions.  However, depending on what your needs are, we might do some stretching, movements, energy work, or fascial release that can at times be a little uncomfortable, but which will help your body release.  "There's the pain of doing Yoga, and the pain of not doing yoga."  A little pain now can prevent ALLOT of pain in the future.

How much does a session cost?

Will this type of work compliment the work I am doing with another professional (therapist, psychiatrist, energy healer)?

YES!  A SomaVedatm Thai Yoga Program is an amazing compliment to other types of work because we work so much on the physical body.  And the body is related to EVERYTHING else that happens emotionally or mentally.  Why?  Because our body is the manifestation of everything we have ever thought or felt.  You may notice that as you work more with your body, it becomes easier to create closure with issues you have had in the past, and your mind is more balanced.  Personally, it seems VERY silly to work on different issues in our life without working with the body.  After all, as my teacher (Dr. Anthony James) likes to say, "The body IS the subconscious mind."  If you want to understand your subconscious, look no further than the body.

What Takes place during a SomaVeda Thai Yoga Therapeutic Program?

Each Therapeutic Program is slightly different, as each moment is slightly (if not completely) different!  That being said, below is a list different things that you may expect during your Therapeutic Program:

  • Deep Relaxation: Every disease can be traced back to one cause: stress.  Eliminate stress and the body will have the maximum potential for healing.
  • Non-ballistic movements of your body as you lie down on a mat (every movement is done in a controlled manner, and the movement can be stopped immediately at any point)
  • Deep tissue release through rhythmic pressure

Compassionate Listening to allow you to discover your OWN truth!

  • Pranayama guidance (energy/breath control), to help bring balance and integrity to our breathing, and in turn, our emotional and mental states
  • Visualization techniques to consciously create the life we want
  • Emotional Freedom Techniques(tm), which help free up any blockages in our physical and energetic body
  • Passive stretching, to help you fully relax like you may have never done so before
  • Resistance-type Stretching, to create powerful and long-lasting results
  • Post-Isometric Stretching, to create balance in the body
  • Conscious day-dreaming, to discover our latent abilities and guidance.  We think day-dreaming is bad... think again! A day-dream is like a dream, except for the fact that we have control over what happens.  What a beautiful opportunity to create experiences in our life!
  • Assisted Yoga Postures, to create position that works best for YOU!
  • Meditation guidance, to help you tap into your internal guidance system so that you ALWAYS have a sense of the direction youare going in.
  • General Dosha Assessment, to help you find balance in your life, and let the natural world serve YOU!

+ Each session will be more individualized than the previous, resulting in a program that suits your needs.

+ Sessions will be geared at addressing specific issues (emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual), as opposed to a general balancing session that takes place in individual sessions.

+ If you are interested, I will help you fine-tune your existing Yoga practice, or help you create an invdividualized practice that you can do at home!

SomaVedatm Thai Yoga Certification Training FAQs

  • Do I have to be a massage therapist or have Yoga experience to do one of these trainings?

NO! These trainings are intended for EVERYONE, regardless of yoga exeperience. The only requirement is a willingness to learn and a sincerity of heart to serve.

  • Will I be able to legally practice after this certification training?

YES! SomaVedatm Thai Yoga is a legal practice in the United States, being that what we do is spiritually-based and is a form of Yoga (we do NOT do "massage". Look at the NY State Department of Education "massage" section and you will see that massage is completely unrelated to the work we do, and makes no mention of spiritual healing, energy, Yoga, chakras, doshas, koshas: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/mt/mtbroch.htm).

  • Do I have to take the different levels of training in sequence?

Although it is encouraged to take the trainings in order, you are welcome to take them out of order. For example, you could take Level 2 first, then Level 1, then Level 3.  However, there is a learning curve, and students find it helpful to first take Level 1 before the more advanced courses.

  • Do you travel to different locations to teach workshops and certification trainings?

Yes! I love to travel to different Yoga studios, retreat centers, and communities to share this beautiful work with them.  If you are interested in hosting a SomaVedatm Thai Yoga certification training, feel free to send me an email to ethanyoga@gmail.com or you can call me directly at 516-410-1163.
